How to Unlock the Mines

The Mines are Fields of Mistria’s primary dungeon: ore for tool upgrades, monsters for combat skill, tablet quests for magic, and a separate dragon statue for mining and combat perks. The gate is Town Rank Stone (level 10) — often shortened to “Rank 10” in community posts — plus a short story quest chain that introduces the elevator, faint penalty, and floor layout. Until mines open, pickaxe use on the surface is limited to farm debris; do not confuse starter rocks with dungeon progression.

Town Rank Stone requirements

Renown raises Town Rank through shipping, museum donations, request-board completions, story quests, and festival participation. Stone rank sits at level 10 on the rank ladder. If your UI shows a lower tier, you are not yet eligible for the mine unlock prompt even if you found the cave entrance visually.

Fast renown loops before Rank 10:

  • Ship multi-harvest crops using insights from crop planner.
  • Donate new museum artifacts after buying a shovel from the General Store (~500 Tesserae).
  • Finish daily request-board jobs that match your inventory.
  • Complete bridge and shop restoration quests from how to repair bridges when available — they often dump lump renown.

Track rank on the town UI and read walkthrough town-rank content if you need a broader checklist; this guide stays focused on the mine gate itself.

Quest chain overview

When rank hits Stone, follow the Unlocking the Mines story marker (exact quest name may vary slightly by patch). NPCs in town comment on the sealed entrance; the chain typically requires:

  1. Speaking to the quest giver at town hall or mine entrance cutscene trigger.
  2. Delivering basic resources or proof of rank if prompted.
  3. Returning after a sleep cycle to enter with elevator access.

Accept the quest early in the day so you can enter, touch floor one, and return before midnight if stamina runs low.

First visit checklist

Bring:

  • Pickaxe (story-provided) upgraded if you already know how to upgrade tools.
  • Weapon for combat skill — even if you plan to avoid fights initially.
  • Six or more cooked meals — buff foods from cooking skill prevent early faints.
  • Torches or light magic later; floor one has visible paths but deeper floors darken.

Leave expensive gifts at home — fainting can waste time even if loot persists. Expand inventory first via how to expand inventory so ore stacks do not force return trips.

Elevator and floor five rule

After you reach floor five once, the elevator remembers it — standard roguelite quality-of-life. Rush to five on visit two, then ten, before farming every copper node on floor two. Mining essence and combat essence feed the mine dragon statue described in skills and essence and combat tips.

What unlocks after mines open

  • Mining and combat perk trees at the dragon statue.
  • Tablet quests starting around floor twenty for Water magic and siblings.
  • Late ores (crystal, obsidian) needed for greenhouse and advanced crafts.
  • Romance and story beats tied to deep floors — cross-link walkthrough romance hubs separately.

Common blockers

Rank stuck at 9: You likely skipped museum donations or request-board streaks. Fish with a rod from how to get a fishing rod and donate catches.

Quest marker missing: Sleep, ensure no festival overwrote NPC schedules, and verify you did not decline a prerequisite bridge quest.

Instant faint on floor three: Eat food, buy weapon upgrade, read combat tips, bind recommended rebinds for dodge.

Post-unlock goals

Set next targets: Water Tablet on floor twenty (magic guide), tool tier upgrades at March’s anvil, and Town Rank pushes toward Carpenter upgrades. Mines are not a side activity — they feed the main economy loop for year one and beyond.
